Paula Gray
Paula is an Oamaru-based acrylic and oil artist who translates the auditory energy of music and the natural harmony and beauty of nature onto canvas, capturing the universal language of creativity and its ability to tell stories.
Growing up in Otago has given her a profound love for the rugged beauty and history of the region, and her emotional connection to Central Otago, and the childhood memories it holds, is at the heart of her work. Her most vivid inspirations are the changing colours of the Clutha River, the trees, the scent of thyme, and the dry dusty rocks and tussock that formed her childhood playground.
Art in its many forms has always been part of Paula's life. She grew up surrounded by musicians and artistic people, with music a constant presence in her home. Much of her youth was spent in and around the mountains and rivers of Central Otago.
Paula spent most of her working life in Christchurch, primarily in operational and event management. A highlight of this period was the opportunity to manage an art workshop with five artists, designing and building floats, creating animated storybook characters, and bringing to life a children's fantasy playground and theatrette that culminated in stage productions. She is a strong believer in involving and encouraging young people in art, and has organised art classes and exhibitions for children.
Seven years ago, Paula and her husband Erik moved to Oamaru, where they have been actively involved in the Oamaru Jazz & Blues Festival, Steampunk, and the beautiful heritage precinct, an environment that has continued to nurture her artistic journey.
Paula has exhibited in one solo and numerous group exhibitions, and her artworks have travelled around the world. She is currently exploring watercolour and pastel, and finds ongoing creative inspiration in connecting with other artists and experimenting with new mediums. Her Oamaru studio welcomes visitors by appointment.
