ABOUT THE QUEENSTOWN ARTS SOCIETY

  • QAS works to promote and encourage participation and opportunities in the visual arts for the benefit of the Queenstown community and the greater Whakatipu.

  • Queenstown Arts Society (QAS) is a registered charity and incorporated society run mainly on the volunteer input of local arts-passionate people, many of whom are artists/makers.

The Queenstown Arts Society grew out of the Whakatipu district’s centennial art exhibition in November 1962.

As an incorporated society, QAS was officially registered on 11 April 1986.

  • QAS is building community awareness of the arts, promoting and supporting artists and makers at every stage of their practice. We do this through:

    • Major art exhibitions that showcase a wide range of talent.

    • Smaller, permanently rotating exhibitions that keep art alive in the community - our QASLaneway Showcase at Te Atamira.

    • Skill-based workshops for anyone keen to learn, create, and connect - like our QASLife Drawingwith Kasia Hebda programme.

    • Promoting our Artist Members through our channels and creating networking opportunities.

Our work bridges the gap for independent artists and makers, helping them develop their practice, build their profiles, and share their work with the public.

MEMBERSHIP & COMMUNITY

Queenstown Arts Society works on a membership basis and everyone is welcome to join us — from hobbyists to established professionals. Becoming a member is the first step on a creative journey supported through connection, encouragement, and opportunities to grow and share your work locally. View the QAS Member’s Constitution here.

LOOKING TO VOLUNTEER?

We’d love to hear from you! Volunteering with QAS is a great way to make a difference in our vibrant, diverse community while connecting with fellow art lovers in a supportive, creative environment.

As a registered charity (CC 49956) and a not-for-profit organisation we rely upon the generosity of our members, grants and support from local and national funding bodies, and donations from individuals and organisations to allow us to do what we do.

If you’d like to lend a hand, please get in touch - ever little bit helps!

QUEENSTOWN ARTS SOCIETY AT TE ATAMIRA

Since 2022, QAS has been a resident organisation at Te Atamira, Queenstown’s vibrant arts, culture, and community hub in Frankton. Te Atamira provides bright, modern exhibition spaces, which we access for the benefit of local and regional artists.

Alongside other resident organisations, we operate through a calendar of events, exhibitions, and creative opportunities that make Te Atamira a lively centre for the arts.

QAS LANEWAY SHOWCASE

We run a rotating exhibition in the main foyer at Te Atamira, featuring QAS Artist Members. Each show runs for several weeks, with works available for sale through the Te Atamira shop. With more than 100,000 visitors passing through Te Atamira every year, it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase your art.

Laneway Showcase is open to QAS Artist Members. To be featured, contact our Arts Coordinator at artscoordinator@queenstownartsociety.co.nz.
